Review of Joker Poker (Cryptologic)

Joker Poker is also called Joker's Wild. This game is played with 53 cards, because a Joker is added to the standard 52 deck. The Joker is wild: it can be used to complete any hand (except a natural Royal Flush).

The pay table for Cryptologic's version of Joker Poker looks as follows:

Hands Cryptologic Full Pay
Royal Flush (without a Joker) 800 800
Five of a Kind 200 200
Joker Royal Flush 100 100
Straight Flush 50 50
Four of a Kind 15 20
Full House 8 7
Flush 5 5
Straight 3 3
Three of a Kind 2 2
Two Pairs 1 1
Kings or Better 1 1
Average return* 97.9469% 100.6463%
Variance* 25.35133 26.24501
*Calculated using "Bob Dancer Presents WinPoker" by Zamzow Software.

The differences with full pay Joker Poker are:

A Four of a Kind pays 15 coins, which is 5 coins below the full pay 20 coins.
A Full House pays 8 coins, one more than the 7 coins full pay.

Though the lowered payout on the Four of a Kind is partly offset by the increased payout on the Full House, the expected return of this game is still well below full pay by almost 3%, as you can see in the table above.

You don't have to play this game one hand at a time. Cryptologic also offers three, five and ten cards varieties.
