Progressive Games

Many games, especially slots and video poker, award you a fixed jackpot if you hit the highest ranking combination of symbols or cards. For example, in most video poker games, a Royal Flush pays the jackpot. On a slot machine the jackpot is awarded if you receive the highest winning combination, as indicated by the paytable. Often the jackpot will be proportionally higher if you bet max coins.

If the jackpot isn't a fixed amount, but grows over time with the amount of action a particular game received, the jackpot is called a progressive jackpot, and the particular game that offers it, a progressive (jackpot) game.

Progressive jackpots can get very large, especially when they are linked to a network of casinos (state or even nationwide). When someone hits the progressive jackpot, the casino doesn't go bankrupt, because the jackpot (except it's starting value, the jackpot seed) is accumulated by reserving a tiny percentage of each bet made at the machine. If you hit the progressive jackpot, the casino will be just as happy as you. They get the free publicity, and you get the money!
